Anaïs is a complex and interesting character, and Reboux is a vessel as skilled as any by which to examine youthful self-image young fat cock and the manner in which that distorts our sexuality. But instead of clearly relating that to the manner in which the girls are at each others’ throats at one minute and young fat cock good-naturedly joking about Anaïs’ weight the next day, Breillat simply holds forth with various threads of young fat cock discourse (indulgence substitutes for economy in the storytelling) that don’t tie together for the film’s incendiary closing. Fat Girl isn’t as nakedly insistent in its restrictive ideology as Romance, nor as ridiculously abstract as Anatomy of Hell. But it is almost as flat and just as self-serious and unrewarding. Extras on this new digital transfer include behind-the-scenes footage from the set, two interviews with the director, a look at an alternate ending and an essay by film scholar Ginette Vincendeau and an interview with Breillat from the French film magazine Positif.
